Organ Donation in Islam

Our colleague, Cheryl Wong from Malaysia informed us of her country's efforts to increase organ donation. Their efforts are particularly interesting to us because of the predominance of Islam and because this method of treatment is not mentioned in the Holy Quran or by the Prophet Muhammad's Sunna. In Malaysia, the organ donation and transplantation decree was established in 1970 (National Decree Council accepting brain death as a diagnosis of death).

In Islam, organ transplant is permissible as long as that it is the last resort and there are not other alternative in saving a patient's life. This type of treatment is permitted if both the donor (in live donation) and the recipient are not facing with any untoward harm because of the procedure involved. The donation has to be made sincerely and not because of monetary payment or rewards, nor to gain popularity or glamour. Organ donation must also receive a donor's consent and must not be forced upon."
